Have a Happy Holiday! – Seasons greetings from the MCRA Board! 2011 has been a wonderful and quiet year for the Association, and we’re looking forward to the same for 2012. On behalf of the MCRA Board, I’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. I look forward to seeing you in 2012!
MCRA Public Relations Committee wants YOU! – The PR Committee is looking for volunteers to serve as committee members. The committee is seeking a cross-section of representation from all over the state to include free-lance, official, CART, captioners. We’d particularly like to have representatives from free-lance court reporting firms from east, west, south and north. We want to be able to spread the word about the MCRA and the value of the official, free-lance, CART and caption reporters. Serving would involve giving presentations, writing articles and attending Bar functions. If you’re interested, please contact Dawn McTeer at verb8m@sbcglobal.net or 314-580-6103.
Motion for Kids - MCRA will be participating in BAMSL’s Motion for Kids annual holiday party on December 17 for the second year in a row. This is an event that benefits children whose parents are incarcerated in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Christmas gifts are donated for these children who otherwise wouldn’t receive gifts. Through the generous donations of our kind membership, we’ve collected $364 that will be used to purchase gifts for 10 children. Jennifer Dunn, Debbie McLaughlin, and Mindie Meseke will be donating their time this Saturday at the Edward Jones Dome to help put smiles on a lot of little faces. Thank you all for your generous contributions.
Region I Successful Festive Holiday Party – Region I held their annual holiday party on December 8 at Square One Brewery in Lafayette Square. There were 40 attendees. Everyone had a great time. It was wonderful to be able to catch up on news with colleagues and enjoy a holiday toast. Ten attendance prizes were given ranging from a bottle of wine to a custom painted fire extinguisher. The food was wonderful. Thanks to Region I VP Renee Bierman for planning such a fun evening. For those who couldn’t attend this year, we hope to see you next year!
Sheila Irvin in a Nutshell - When I was 17 years old and thinking about going to college to become a legal secretary, my oldest brother Mike introduced me to a court reporter in Cape Girardeau by the name of Wally Sontag. He showed me his steno machine and told me about his work. I enrolled at St. Louis Community College at Meramec soon thereafter and never looked back.
I started out freelancing in St. Louis for 11 years and then came to Cape Girardeau in 1995 as an official reporter for the 32nd Judicial Circuit working with Judge William Syler. It was shortly thereafter that my colleague and mentor, Russell Welder, talked me into serving on the MCRA board. To this day, some of my closest friends are the court reporters I have worked with over the years and met while serving on the board. I have been reporting for 27 years now and I absolutely love the career path I have chosen.

Region I Trivia Night – Region I is hosting their annual trivia night on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at the Shrewsbury Community Center, 5200 Shrewsbury Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63119. Laurie Bennett, Shana Crane, Sue Moody, and Reagan Fiorino will be hosting this fun-filled evening. You don’t want to miss it. Please mark your calendars early.
